What a Long Narrow Horizontal Window Actually Is
A long narrow windows horizontal format is a wide, shallow unit, often called a ribbon window, clerestory window or slit window. It runs along a wall instead of sitting as a punched opening. The shape does the work: daylight enters high or low, wall space stays usable, and eye level stays private. On a modern elevation, one continuous band reads cleaner than four separate windows.
Most buyers meet this format on a stair landing, above a kitchen counter, in a bathroom, or as a clerestory strip near the ceiling. The window is rarely a stock size. How These Windows Are Built
Four things decide whether a ribbon run looks right and works right.
Fixed or Awning
Most of a ribbon run is fixed glass for the cleanest sightline. One or two awning units, hinged at the top and pushing outward, bring ventilation into the same band without rain blowing in.
Mulled Into One Band
Several units join with mullion profiles to form one continuous window. Mullion width and alignment decide whether the run reads as a single window or as a row of separate ones.
Clad Wood Build
Solid wood on the interior, aluminum cladding outside, on a 6063-T5 aluminum clad wood profile. The wood gives you a warm interior face; the aluminum takes the weather.
Glass and Hardware
Double or triple Low-E glass with a 33 mm notch, plus a built-in grille or lattice option. Operable units use multi-point locking and hardware from ROTO, SIEGENIA, CMECH, HOPPE, HOPO or KINLONG.

Start with the run, not the unit. Measure the rough opening as one opening, then decide how many units fill it and where the mullions land. A buyer who wants a clean band will keep mullions aligned with the fixed units and put the awning units where a person can actually reach the handle. Awning windows are hinged at the top and push outward, so they ventilate without rain entering. That's why they suit a band above a counter or a high strip where a casement sash would swing into the room.
Then check the wall. A wide horizontal opening needs a header sized by your engineer, and the mullion layout is set before fabrication, not on site. Questions buyers ask
What is a long narrow window called?
