What a 36x12 Window Actually Is
A 36x12 window is a rough opening 36 in wide by 12 in high, which is 3'0" x 1'0". Some suppliers call it a 3010 or a 3x1 window. Three feet across and one foot tall. That proportion tells you most of what you need to know before you order anything. It's a transom shape, not a bedroom window.

Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the opening. Same for height: left, center and right. Use the smallest of the three width readings and the smallest of the three height readings. That smallest pair protects you from a crooked frame, and it is the number we build to. Measure the opening itself. Not the old sash, not the old frame sitting inside it.
Then note the wall depth. Note whether the interior and exterior finishes are already in. A 36x12 sits low in the wall, so trim and tile depth matter more here than on a tall window. Send photos and a simple sketch with the three readings. Our technical team reviews the measurement before quoting, and if something looks off, you hear about it before the drawing stage rather than after.

If a supplier hands you a wind load number without telling you which test method produced it, ask. That is a fair question for any factory, including us.
